Beijing, January 5 -- Reporter Chen Chen learned from the 2017 National Water Resources Department director meeting held in Beijing on January 5 that this year China will strengthen the supervision and management of water functional areas, carry out safety assessment of important drinking water sources, complete the construction of 10,298 groundwater monitoring stations, and basically complete the construction of a national groundwater monitoring system.


Chen Lei, minister of water resources, said that in 2016, China accelerated the implementation of the action plan on water pollution prevention and control, tightened the management of water function zones and the protection of drinking water sources, and steadily improved the quality of water function zones of major rivers and lakes.


Chen Lei stressed that this year, the Ministry of Water Resources will do a solid job of flood prevention, drought prevention and typhoon prevention, speed up the construction of weak links in water conservancy after the disaster, strive to start 15 major water conservancy projects, ensure an additional 20 million mu of efficient water-saving irrigation area, improve the total amount of water consumption and intensity of the double control index system, complete the water distribution in 20 inter-provincial river basins. We actively connected rivers, lakes, and reservoirs with water systems, and completed the comprehensive control of soil erosion for 54,000 square kilometers, the comprehensive improvement of sloping farmland, and the construction of ecologically clean small river basins.
